Foreign state-sponsored disinformation ceded the spotlight in 2022 as the year’s volatile political environment saw local actors and politicians sharpen their rhetoric and employ falsehoods themselves.
While greater attention and resources have been devoted to combating foreign influence operations, state actors have continued to operate in the background, modifying their tactics to evade mitigation measures and improve the resilience of their disinformation networks.
We investigated some of the steps being taken by state actors and the key messages being propagated. We also outlined the developments in the global framework to counter disinformation, which as yet remain insufficient in comprehensively addressing the growing threat of foreign disinformation.
