Has Taylor Swift endorsed Trump for President?

By February 8, 2024 International Politics

We came across several posts on X circulating a short video clip that appears to show Taylor Swift carrying a flag that reads “Trump won; Democrats Cheated!” with the claim that the popular American singer and songwriter has endorsed Donald Trump for U.S. President in 2024.

While some comments on these posts have expressed scepticism over Swift’s alleged support for Trump, many seem to have taken the video at face value and added comments in support of Trump.

Trump flag

The flag containing the phrase “Trump won; Democrats Cheated!” appears to refer to the conspiracy theory that Trump won the 2020 U.S. presidential elections instead of Joe Biden – the current U.S. President who is from the Democratic party. Trump and his supporters claim that he was cheated out of a second term due to election fraud.

However, ballot recounts and thorough reviews of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election results confirmed that Biden did indeed win the elections. In addition, there has been no evidence found to date that there was widespread voter fraud which would have resulted in a different outcome.

Is Taylor for Trump?

The videos of Swift that have been circulating on X contain a watermark by Variety, a media company that focuses on entertainment news.

We found the original videos that were uploaded by Variety to their YouTube channel and X account. The footage of Swift was taken during her arrival on the red carpet of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, an award ceremony recognising the achievements of artists in the music industry, which was recently held on 4 February 2024.

Videos of Swift on the red carpet at the award ceremony were also uploaded to the official Grammy’s YouTube channel.

The original video shows Swift walking the red carpet in a white dress with black gloves. She was also not holding any flags. This differs from the videos shared on X, where Swift is not wearing any gloves while holding the flag in support of Trump.

Hence, the videos of Taylor Swift holding a flag in support of Trump were likely manipulated and false. There is no evidence, through her official social media accounts or any official statements, that she is endorsing Trump for President in 2024.

Is Swift feeling the heat?

Swift has lately been the subject of conspiracies spread by right-wing figures in the U.S. Black Dot Research recently debunked the claim that Taylor Swift is a government psychological operation (psyop) to influence population sentiment in light of the upcoming elections.

Some media sources have speculated that the recent focus on Swift might be due to her latest relationship with U.S. National Football League (NFL) star Travis Kelce. With the upcoming SuperBowl – the annual NFL championship game – conversations about the NFL, Kelce, and Swift are gaining popularity online. Conspiracy theorists are likely leveraging this increased engagement to further their own narratives.

Hence, it is crucial to refer to credible information sources in order to make informed decisions and avoid potentially being misled by popular online opinions.
