[VaccineWatch]: Did Malaysia’s Health Minister lie about having taken two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine?

We came across this post on Facebook:

Translated, the author of the post observed that the clothes that Malaysian health minister Khairy Jamaluddin wore for both of his Covid-19 jabs were similar, with the placard he holds in the pictures being the only significant difference. The messages on the placards translate to “I have been vaccinated” for the top picture and “I completed 2 doses” for the one on the bottom. Based on this, the post speculates that Minister Jamaluddin had lied about being double vaccinated, having taken both pictures of his vaccinations on the same day.

A quick search on the first image found a post on Minister Jamaluddin’s official Facebook page dated March 18 2021 while we found the post for the second jab on his page on April 8 2021.

While the outfits look very similar at first glance, a closer look at the two different posts found that the minister had in fact opted for a different choice of footwear and socks on the separate occasions.

As seen from the images above, while a subtle change, Minister Jamaluddin wore yellow socks and chukka boots for his first vaccination dose, and a pair of turquoise socks and low top sneakers for his second vaccination appointment.

A factcheck conducted by Agence France-Presse (AFP), a French news agency with a global fact-checking operation had examined the claim as well. According to the minister’s press secretary Raja Syahrir Abu Bakar: “He wore same t-shirt for both occasions. But you can see the shoes and socks are different.”

Based on these slight differences in the outfit then, the claim that the Malaysian health minister’s photos were taken at the same vaccination appointment is false.
