Have hundreds of Christmas markets in Germany been cancelled due to the threat of terrorist attacks?

A post circulating online claims that “hundreds of Christmas markets” across Germany have been cancelled en masse due to fears of terrorist attacks. The post attributes this claim to reports by an outlet called Dunapress and incorporates emotive language asking how much more the public must “give” before saying enough.

When we conducted a search on this however, we found no evidence that hundreds of Christmas markets in Germany have been cancelled for security reasons in 2025. Germany hosts thousands of Christmas markets each year, and reporting by reputable, established news agencies confirms that the vast majority are proceeding as scheduled. Major markets in cities such as Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Nuremberg are open and operating for the holiday season.

While security measures at Christmas markets have been strengthened in recent years due to past incidents in Europe, this does not amount to closures. Heightened police presence, bag checks, vehicle barriers and other protective measures are now common for large public events in Germany and reflect routine risk management rather than emergency closures. Reporting from multiple outlets explains that visible security fortifications are often misrepresented online as evidence of cancelled events.

A small number of individual Christmas markets have been cancelled this year, but these are isolated and typically linked to local factors such as costs, staffing challenges, construction or administrative decisions — not to a coordinated national policy on terrorism risk. Fact checks by European news organisations and local reporting confirm that these limited cancellations are not unusual and do not approach the scale of “hundreds.”

The post’s reliance on Dunapress as a primary source significantly diminishes its credibility. A search for the outlet returns minimal identifying information; while it appears to be a news outlet focused on global affairs, Dunapress has little discernible online presence beyond its own site and is not widely cited by established German or international news organizations. Uncorroborated claims attributed to sources with a limited public track record require a high degree of skepticism, particularly when they involve broad assertions concerning major nationwide events.

Taken together, the evidence does not support the claim that Germany has cancelled hundreds of Christmas markets due to fears of terrorist attacks. Most markets are operating normally, with enhanced security that reflects long-standing practices for public safety. The narrative of mass cancellations relies on exaggeration, isolated examples, and unverified sources, and reflects a broader pattern of misinformation that frames routine precautions as signs of cultural decline.
