Did Instagram suspend Zohran Mamdani’s account for being “too socialist”?

We came across the following story on Reddit:

According to the article from “NYC Journals”, Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City in the 2025 Mayoral election had his Instagram account temporarily suspended on Monday, July 21stfor 3 hours. The story cited Instagram senior directors who deemed his content “too socialist” and going against current national US interest in an internally circulated memo.

Mamdani, a 33 year-old self-identified democratic socialist stands to be New York City’s youngest mayor since 1917 if elected, and has gained popularity due to his ambitious policy proposals, focused on affordability, promising free buses, universal childcare, a $30 minimum hourly wage, a rent freeze and city-run supermarkets – all paid for with higher taxes on the top 1% of earners. However, his proposed policies have also drawn ire for being too radical by his opponents, with US President Donald Trump notably referring to him as a 100% Communist Lunatic on his Truth Social platform.

What is NYC Journals?

A closer examination of NYC Journals raises serious red flags about its credibility and origins. A WHOIS lookup—a standard tool used to uncover details such as domain registration dates and ownership—reveals that the website was only registered on 29 June 2025, less than a month before this viral story was published. This timing is particularly suspect given the proximity to the New York City mayoral election and the lack of any prior digital footprint for the site.

The website’s “About Us” section does little to dispel concerns. It vaguely positions itself as a platform for financial literacy, yet there is not a single finance-related article on the site. Instead, the site features a scant collection of politically charged stories, none of which are attributed to identifiable authors or editors. There is no masthead, no contact details, and no transparency regarding its ownership or editorial processes—hallmarks of a credible news operation.

Moreover, attempts to corroborate the Mamdani suspension claim lead nowhere. No reputable media outlet has picked up the story, despite Mamdani being a prominent and controversial political figure. The absence of any third-party verification, coupled with the site’s obscure origins and vague mission, suggests this is not an independent outlet operating in good faith.

While it is impossible to say definitively who is behind NYC Journals, the site bears striking similarities to known tactics in coordinated disinformation campaigns: sudden emergence, anonymous authorship, narrow content focus, and a clear political edge. Whether foreign or domestic in origin, the story appears engineered less to inform than to provoke—and possibly to mislead.

As such, we rate the claim that Instagram suspended Zohran Mamdani’s account for being “too socialist” as false due to the lack of evidence supporting the claim. The claim appears to originate from a highly questionable source with hallmarks of disinformation.
