We came across this claim circulating on Reddit:

The post claims that US President Donald Trump had been “quietly removed” from the Nobel Peace Prize nominee list by the Nobel Committee, due to violations of international norms and his ongoing criminal proceedings. The claim even appeared to show a headline from the Nobel Prize’s official website, lending an additional layer of legitimacy to the image.
At first glance, the claim might sound believable. Trump’s name has indeed been linked to the Nobel Peace Prize in the past — though only because some nominators (typically politicians) publicly announced that they had submitted his name. In fact, The Guardian recently reported that Trump had even cold-called Norway’s finance minister to ask about a nomination.
However, when we checked the official Nobel Prize website, there was no such headline about Trump being “removed.” Instead, the site makes it very clear that:
- The Nobel Committee never confirms the names of nominees — not to the media, and not even to the nominees themselves.
- Names that appear in public usually come from speculation or because nominators themselves choose to announce their submissions.
- Under strict confidentiality rules, the names of nominators and nominees are sealed for 50 years.
This means there is no official “nominee list” in the public domain. Any lists claiming to show who is “in” or “out” are therefore unofficial. More importantly, the Committee has no mechanism for “removing” or “stripping” a nominee, since nominees are never officially acknowledged in the first place.
For context, the Nobel Institute confirmed that they had registered a total of 286 candidates for the Peace Prize in 2024, of which 197 were individuals and 89 being organisations. In the accompanying press release, they confirmed that the names of nominators and nominees would only be released after 50 years. This restriction on disclosing nominee names might be a way to insulate the selection process from public opinion, media campaigns, or political pressure that could arise if the nomination process were public.
Based on the official information from the Novel Prize website, Donald Trump has not been “removed” from the Nobel Peace Prize nominee list. The Nobel Committee never confirms nominees, does not publish lists, and has no process for removing names. The claim originates from a fabricated screenshot, and a misunderstanding of how the nomination process works.
This claim highlights how misinformation often spreads through the use of doctored or misleading screenshots. By attaching what looks like a headline from nobelprize.org, the Reddit post creates an illusion of credibility. Coupled with the fact that Trump has previously been linked to Peace Prize nominations, the claim feels more plausible than it actually is. Such tactics where fabricated “evidence” is blended with real-world context are common in online misinformation campaigns.
